Applying for Medical School

Is it right for you?

A career in medicine is often described as a ‘vocation’ rather than just a job. Doctors are highly educated and specialised professionals who navigate some of the most demanding roles in healthcare, often under very stressful circumstances.

Being sure that you want to be a doctor is vital. Doctors tend to enjoy a high status in most societies and with good reason. Their dedication, skills, abilities and compassion are tested each and every day. Being a doctor is not just about getting through a medical degree and landing a highly paid job, in fact many junior doctors earn comparatively little for the number of hours they invest into their careers. We at BeMedics, are keen to help you explore your potential and come to a natural conclusion as to whether medicine is for you. Our MSAP Course will help you discover your potential in a step-by-step approach building on each module and allowing you to make this crucial decision.

How to approach applying

All potential medical students find the thought of making an application a bit daunting. Most will say that this is because the chances of securing a place are small, hence the application needs to be perfect. We are not entirely sure that this is the correct approach.

What is a perfect application? In our experience, there seldom is such a thing. Each application is different because you are different. What is relevant in your application may be completely irrelevant in another. Using the MSAP Course will help you think about the application from an authentic perspective and help you draw out the most relevant aspects of your academic career so far and your life experiences which will, in turn, help you present your story. We know, from discussions with admissions tutors and heads of medical schools, what they are looking for. They want to know your story and the reasons why YOU have chosen this career. What they don’t want, is to hear what you think, they want you to say!

When to start searching

When you start your search is a personal decision, but our advice on timing is important. Universities are at liberty to change entry criteria, the number of places or how their curriculum is going to be delivered from one year to the next, so looking too early could be a problem. However, being fully prepared is also important and research can take time.

Our advice is that you start a ‘soft’ search as soon as you start your final two years of your high school and in fact Module 2 of our MSAP Course will help you work through the process of researching and selecting universities, so you won’t be going it alone!

UK Medical School comparison

Choosing which medical school to apply to is as important as the decision to study medicine. You are going to spend five or more years at the institution, so getting the right fit for you, is paramount.

Whilst there are a number of online tools to compare various aspects of medical schools, we have put together a focused comparison grid for your benefit (available in Module 2). We have looked at many aspects including how many places each medical school has for international students; whether the school asks for entrance exam requirements and what kind of curriculum they are delivering.

Starting your application

Most UK medical Schools require you to apply through the UCAS system. However, there are a few universities which are happy to accept direct applications, without the need to go through UCAS.

At BeMedics, we are happy to help process your application, once you have completed the MSAP Course.  We can guide you through the various steps, including a full review of your application and as we have strong connections with a number of medical schools, we can keep you updated on the progress of your application.

We can also arrange live sessions for you, although spaces are always limited, so please contact us early. If you would like us to help you with you application, please visit our Additional Services page and complete our enquiry form.
